LASIK

Progressive addition lens

If you are one of the thousands of people considering LASIK laser eye surgery, then you will probably be gathering as much information as possible about the treatment. By this point, you are probably aware of the benefits that LASIK offers, such as a reduced or eliminated need for glasses or contact lenses and greater convenience in your day-to-day life.

Here at Dr. Obermark Eye Health Care, we are proud to offer exams to qualify for LASIK and refer you to the right surgeon for a consultation.

Amblyopia

Progressive addition lens

Amblyopia, also known as a “lazy eye,” is described as a reduced vision in one eye compared to the other. There are some rare forms of amblyopia that involve both eyes. Amblyopia is the most common cause of partial or total blindness in one eye in children.

Conjunctivitis

Progressive addition lens

Commonly called “pink eye,” conjunctivitis is caused by a contagious virus or bacteria. Your body’s allergies to pollen, cosmetics, animals, or fabrics often bring on allergic conjunctivitis, and irritants like air pollution, noxious fumes, and chlorine in swimming pools may produce the chemical form of conjunctivitis. Viral and bacterial forms of conjunctivitis can be treated with eye drops if caught early in the disease process. If you are experiencing symptoms of conjunctivitis, your Dr. Obermark Eye Health Care optometrist can diagnose the cause and prescribe effective treatment.

Glaucoma

Progressive addition lens

If you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma, you’re probably already familiar with the typical options in glaucoma treatment, such as eye drops, laser treatment, or traditional surgery. While these are certainly effective, especially when glaucoma is diagnosed early, researchers have been working hard to offer new glaucoma treatments. Their goal is not only to improve outcomes but also to reduce the treatment’s side effects and frequency of use.

Dry Eye Disease

Progressive addition lens

Dry eye is a chronic disease, so it’s long-lasting and doesn’t go away easily. Dry eye is a very common eye condition. Not everyone experiences dry eye the same way. Some may experience a gritty feeling, while others may result in itchiness. Some may have both symptoms. Stress could also cause dry eye symptoms, leading to inflammation on the surface of the eye.

Healthy tears help lubricate, heal and protect the eyes, but when you have poor-quality tears, they could contribute to inflammation of the surface as well. If you leave symptoms untreated, they get worse and are harder to treat. If you’re having any of the symptoms mentioned above, it's time to talk to your doctor to figure out the first step to healing and lubricating your dry eyes.

While dry eye isn’t a serious condition, it can have a major impact on your quality of life. You may find your eyes get tired faster or you have difficulty reading, a burning sensation or blurry vision. Let us take a look at your dry eye treatment options, from simple self-care to innovative prescriptions and therapies, to help you see clearly and comfortably.

Cataracts

Progressive addition lens

If you’ve been diagnosed with cataracts, you may wonder if cataract surgery is right around the corner. Not to worry, there are preventive steps you can take to slow the progression and preserve your vision. That doesn’t mean you won’t eventually need surgery, but you can at least delay the need for quite a while.

Cataracts are caused by cloudy, protein build-up on the lens of the eye, which can cause blurred vision and blindness if left untreated. Cataracts generally happen gradually and come with age, but they can appear when the eye is injured or after eye surgery. Cataracts can also be present at birth, which is a rare occasion called deprivation amblyopia (see amblyopia). Cataracts can be caused by health issues like diabetes, glaucoma, or certain by prescription medications. Smoking or alcohol abuse increases the chance of developing cataracts.

Keratoconus

Progressive addition lens

Keratoconus is a terrifying diagnosis for those that have experienced it. To compound issues, many patients complain that they had poor initial treatment due to a lack of understanding about the disease. If proper treatment is not achieved, individuals may experience a rapid deterioration in their ability to see. This leads to a reduced quality of life. You can reduce the stress related to a keratoconus diagnosis and increase the benefits of treatment by understanding your treatment options.

Ortho-K

Progressive addition lens

Ortho-K is short for orthokeratology, which is an alternative procedure for LASIK. This non-surgical procedure improves vision by gently reshaping the front surface of the eye while you sleep using specially designed contact lenses. You just put the lenses in before bed and while you sleep, and when you wake, you have crisper clearer vision. This effective treatment can correct farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia safely. It’s a great alternative to LASIK for patients who don’t want to risk surgery.

Macular

Degeneration

Progressive addition lens

Macular degeneration, commonly referred to as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is the single largest cause of sight loss in the developed world and affects more than 10 million Americans. It usually affects people over the age of 60 but has been known to affect those who are younger. It is a painless condition that usually affects both eyes with the loss being experienced in the central vision. It does not affect peripheral vision, meaning that it does not cause total blindness.
